CANANDAIGUA, NY — The Lake House on Canandaigua has hit the big time.
In Travel + Leisure magazine’s It List for 2021, the hotel was one of the 73 properties cited as “essential” to visit, even if each of the resorts and hotels had opened amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Describing it as “within striking distance” of touring a vineyard or hiking, the magazine said the hotel was “pilgrimage-worthy.”
“In many ways, the Lake House feels like a super-sized vacation home, with an enviable location at the northern tip of the lake, with a swimming pool, a dock (boat rentals are available), a sprawling yard with fire pits and lawn games,” the piece continues. The excerpt also suggested the best reason to visit was to “wake up with a view of the lake and to wander down, bare foot, for a swim.”
With the list highlighting locations across 29 countries, including Asia, Africa and Europe, having the former motor lodge included among these other international venues was “incredibly humbling,” according to General Manager Simon Dewar.
“This is so exciting for us and for the area,” Dewar said in a phone interview, adding, “we’re in incredibly good company.”
The Lake House, on the former site of the Inn on the Lake, was developed by the Sands family and includes a 125-guest hotel, timber-frame barn, dock and other amenities. The hotel also contains the Rose Tavern, a restaurant which offers a unique seasonal menu along with specialty drinks.
According to Dewar, Travel + Leisure’s It List is the hospitality industry’s equivalent to the Academy Awards for the entertainment industry, which makes the placement of the Lake House a notable achievement.
“It’s been an incredibly difficult year across the hospitality industry,” Dewar said, adding that with the release of the list, it was “time for some good news.”
“It’s been a challenging time for all of us, not only from the pandemic itself but from the restrictions on travel during this pandemic,” he said, adding that the Lake House appearing on the list meant “we’re just over the moon. It’s incredible.”
